New Delhi, May 23: Employees of state-owned IDBI Bank have given a nationwide strike call for their wage-related demands, asking for their long-pending wage revision. Two major unions namely the All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA) chalked out separate agitation and strike programmes in support of early wage revision in IDBI Bank. According to the unions, the reason given by the management is that there has been an increase in IDBI bank’s bad loans. The management said that the IDBI Bank has not been performing well lately.
A joint circular was issued by the All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA) which said, “Should the management of IDBI bank continue with their adamant attitude and should the government continue to remain silent in this manner, AIBEA and AIBOA will have to think of exclusive agitational programmes and strike action in support of early wage revision in IDBI Bank.” Wage revision has been completed in all other banks with the signing of the Bipartite Settlement in May, 2015 but the wage revision in IDBI Bank is due from December 1, 2012.

A report by The Hindu states that it is believed that the bank management has received a strike notice from the United Forum of All India IDBI Bank Officers and Employees. The AIBEA and AIBOA claimed that the IDBI Bank management and the government are unwarrantedly delaying wage revision in that bank. “Everyone is aware that the employees and officers of IDBI Bank are no less efficient than other bank employees and are in no way responsible for the mismanagement of the bank or the losses incurred by the bank due to huge bad loans”, the unions were quoted by IANS.
The unions further added that instead of taking action on the officials responsible for such mismanagement, it is unfortunate that the employees and officers are sought to be penalised in this manner. The IDBI Bank on Thursday reported its net loss at Rs 3,199.76 crore for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2016-17 ended March 31. There is a plunge of over 84 per cent from a net loss of Rs 1,735.81 crore reported during Q4 last fiscal.
