New Delhi: If your income is not subject to audit, only three weeks remain to file your Income Tax Return (ITR). The Income Tax Department has begun sending SMS reminders. The final deadline for filing ITR is 15th September 2025. The SMS from the department states: “Over 3 crore ITRs have been filed so far! Please file and e-verify your ITR for AY 2025-26 on the e-filing portal before 15.09.25.” In this article, we will explain whether it is mandatory for individuals with an annual salary of up to ₹3 lakh to file an income tax return.
Talking to Live Hindustan, Sanjoli Maheshwari, Executive Director of Nangia & Co LLP, said that for the financial year 2024-25, the requirement to file an income tax return depends on the taxpayer’s total income and the chosen tax regime—either the old or the new tax regime.
According to the ET report, Sanjoli Maheshwari said that if a taxpayer’s total income exceeds the basic exemption limit, they must file an ITR. For the new tax regime, the basic exemption limit is ₹3 lakh, while for the old tax regime, it is ₹2.5 lakh.
