The chief executive officer (CEO) of YouTube, Neal Mohan, has been named TIME Magazine’s 2025 CEO of the Year for his “cultural transformation” of the world’s largest video-sharing platform.

“Mohan is a cultural architect, busy redesigning how billions of people around the globe get their information and entertainment. Mohan is the farmer; what he cultivates will be what we eat,” TIME profile of Mohan, an Indian-origin executive who took over as YouTube’s CEO in 2023, states. TIME described YouTube as “the soil” on to which creators are planting “nutritious” or “noxious” content that will eventually form the world’s diet of entertainment and information. Early Life & Background

Neal Mohan was born on July 14, 1973, in Lafayette, Indiana, to Tamil parents from Lucknow, India.

The family moved to Lucknow in the mid-1980s, where Mohan grew up, learnt to speak Hindi fluently, was taught Sanskrit, and got inspired by elements that he would later compare to the grammar and structure of computer code.

After moving back to the United States (US), Mohan completed a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University before earning an MBA from the same institution. He started working as a consultant with Accenture (previously Andersen Consulting) in 1996, before leaving to join a startup called NetGravity. NetGravity was acquired by an advertising-technology company called DoubleClick (now part of Google) a few years later. Mohan went on to become its chief product officer (CPO) as the company came under the gaze of some of the biggest names in the tech industry.Career – From Advertising to Global Recognition

DoubleClick was eventually acquired by Google in 2007, setting the stage for Mohan to lead its advertising efforts. At Google, Mohan held several roles over the years – including as CPO and chief business officer (CBO) – before leaving in 2023 to take on the role of head of advertising and monetisation at YouTube. A year later, in 2024, he took over the reins as YouTube CEO after Susan Wojcicki.

Vision, Achievements & Challenges

Neal Mohan has been instrumental in expanding YouTube’s offerings beyond traditional videos to include mobile platforms, television, live streaming, short-form videos, and many more. Mohan has also laid focus on creator empowerment, monetisation, expanding global reach, and integrating next-generation technologies such as AI to help creators make their content – all of it while facing challenges such as content moderation, misinformation, hate speech, and unpredictable changes in consumer behaviour on a global platform.

Over the last few months, the platform, under Mohan, has reportedly settled a lawsuit – after a court allowed the suit to move forward – for US$ 24.5 million in September 2025 and without admission of any wrongdoing. The lawsuit claimed that the platform did not do enough to stop hate speech on the video-streaming app.

Mohan has also been criticised for how YouTube handles content and the challenge of balancing free speech with responsibility. Even with these issues, he continues to support an “everything for everyone” approach, wanting YouTube to become a truly global platform that creators and viewers from all languages and cultures can use.

What this Recognition means?

Naming Mohan TIME’s CEO of the Year is a recognition of not just his business and strategic acumen but also his status as a point of connection between the global tech world and his Indian roots and diaspora identity. As one of the very few Indian-origin executives to lead a major global digital media company – and to preside over YouTube, especially – Mohan’s success is being felt not just in the boardrooms and studios but in households and living rooms across India and around the world. The platform, in many ways, has become a part of the country’s media culture, changing how people communicate and consume.

In a world where what billions around the world watch, read, listen to and use to interact with one another, to learn and to be entertained is inextricably connected to digital platforms – and where these platforms are changing all of us in both subtle and fundamental ways – Mohan’s work and his vision for YouTube will almost certainly have an impact on generations to come.
