New Delhi, November 3: In a bid to simplify the process to link Aadhaar with mobile SIM, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced an easy way that will allow individuals to link their Unique Identity Number with mobile numbers or SIM using an OTP. Starting December 1, users can link the two at their own comfort from December 1, 2017. According to a recent tweet by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which issues the 12-digit personal identification number or Aadhaar number, there is no need to give fingerprints to local SIM card retailer for linking the Aadhaar to your mobile number. “No need to give fingerprints to local SIM card retailer for your mobile phone verification… From December 1, 2017, you can do it from the comfort of your home through OTP received on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar,” said the UIDAI.
The UIDAI has offered an OTP or One-Time Pin as a mode of authentication. Under one-time PIN-based authentication, an OTP with a limited period validity is sent to the mobile number and/ or e-mail address of the Aadhaar number holder registered with Aadhaar. “The Aadhaar number holder shall provide this OTP along with his Aadhaar number during authentication and the same shall be matched with the OTP generated by the Authority,” according to the UIDAI.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) recently introduced three options to link UID with mobile connection: an app-based method, an OTP-based method and an IVRS facility. The telecom operators have welcomed the latest clarifications by the DoT on Aadhaar card linking. In a press release dated October 25, the DoT said, telecom users will soon get more options to complete the process of linking their Aadhaar card with the mobile connection. “These new methods will help subscribers to get their mobile number linked to Aadhaar without visiting the stores of the telcos (telecom companies).
The Centre on Thursday informed that it was the Supreme Court which had approved the rule for mandatory Aadhaar-mobile number linkage in the Lokniti Foundation case on February 6, 2017, while giving a window of one year. The Centre told the Supreme Court that the Aadhaar-Mobile SIM linking should be completed by February 6, under e-KYC verification and failure to do so will amount to deactivation of the mobile number. Mentioning about safety in linking Aadhaar with mobile number, the UIDAI noted that verifying mobile number with Aadhaar adds extra layer of security to your SIM as nobody else can use your identity to get a connection in your name.
