Apple has cut dozens of jobs in its global sales teams which is a rare move for the world’s most valuable tech company, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Employees were informed over the past two weeks, and the job cuts affected teams that handle sales to big companies, schools and government departments. Apple has not revealed the exact number of roles removed.

Who lost their jobs?

According to the report, the layoffs impacted several parts of Apple’s sales organisation. This included account managers who work with major business clients, universities and government agencies. Employees who run Apple’s briefing centres, places where the company shows new products to important customers, were also among those let go. Apple confirmed that it is reorganising its corporate sales setup but did not share details.

A company spokesperson told Bloomberg, “We are making some changes to our sales team so we can reach more customers. This affects a small number of roles. We are still hiring, and employees in impacted positions can apply for other jobs inside Apple.”

The cuts also affected some senior managers who had been at the company for 20 to 30 years, Bloomberg reported. Workers whose roles were removed have until January 20 to secure another position within Apple. After that, they will be laid off and receive severance pay. Apple is currently hiring for several sales roles and has urged affected employees to apply.

Job cuts come despite record revenue, strong forecasts

Apple announced the job cuts even though the company is earning more money than ever. Its revenue has been rising at the fastest rate seen in years, and Apple is expected to report almost USD 140 billion in sales for the December quarter. The company is also working on a new low-cost laptop for early next year, aimed at attracting more business and education buyers. The latest restructuring follows earlier cuts in Australia and New Zealand, where about 20 sales jobs were removed a few weeks ago.

Apple usually avoids large layoffs. CEO Tim Cook has said in the past that cutting jobs is something the company does only when absolutely necessary. Still, Apple has faced some downsizing pressures. In 2024, the company cut several hundred positions after cancelling major projects, including its long-running self-driving car effort and work on its own display technology. Some teams in AI and services were also affected.

These changes come at a time when the wider tech industry is going through yet another round of job reductions. Amazon recently announced plans to remove more than 14,000 positions, and Meta has cut several hundred jobs in its AI division.
