India’s exports are growing significantly, and the country is on the brink of making history. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India is set to achieve a record USD 800 billion in exports in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which is a positive sign for the country’s economy. This announcement comes at a time when India is expecting an increase in the production of onions, tomatoes, and potatoes for the crop year ending June 2025. Addressing the Rajya Sabha on Friday, the minister highlighted that India’s exports have grown significantly over the past four years, and this upward trend is expected to continue in the 2024-25 fiscal year as well.
During the Question Hour, he stated, “For the first time in India’s history, our exports will cross USD800 billion.” Responding to a query from Congress leader Rajeev Shukla, he also dismissed claims that India’s exports were declining, calling them “not entirely true.”
Goyal also expressed concerns about a decrease in foreign exchange reserves, rejecting any worries. He said that forex reserves have remained consistently above USD600 billion for several months. Some imports are mandatory due to domestic shortages and high demand, he said highlighting that an increase in imports is a positive sign of economic growth. This rise in imports is because of higher domestic consumption. Major imports include – petroleum products, coking coal, pulses, and edible oils.
“Setting up and operationalizing production units takes time. During this period, imports naturally rise,” he said.
Goyal explained that when imports of things increase in a specific sector, it attracts industrial investments. This boosts employment and overall investment.
Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry has projected an increase in the production of onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and other horticultural crops for this year.
Notably, onion production is expected to witness the highest growth. Its production will witness a rise by 19 percent. Additionally, the production of fruit, plantation crops, and spices are also going to increase this year. However, the total cultivated area has slightly declined compared to 2024.
However, the total cultivated area has declined from 29.09 million hectares (2024) to 28.84 million hectares this year.
