Elon Musk and Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani and Sunila Mittal are locked in a standoff over satellite spectrum and nuances of its allocation. Tech billionaire Elon Musk recently thanked Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for not agreeing with Indian tycoons Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal on auctioning spectrum for satellite services, saying he is looking forward to serving Indians.
Telecom companies and Starlink are becoming active in India’s satellite network space. After this move, Mukesh Ambani led Jio has made another demand to TRAI and requested them to revise Satcom papers, while TRAI is considering satellite spectrum allocation. Companies are gearing up for a swift rollout of satellite networks, and Elon Musk’s Starlink has already applied for a license.
Elon Musk Vs Mukesh Ambani
Both Jio and Airtel are preparing to enter the satellite network market, while Elon Musk’s Starlink is also planning to make its mark in India. Jio has written to TRAI, urging a review of satellite spectrum allocation and calling for a level playing field between satellite and terrestrial services.
Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper have also applied for licenses to provide satellite broadband services, indicating that the future of mobile satellite services in India is poised for significant changes. Jio and other telecom companies, including Airtel, are closely watching these developments.

Jio’s Letter To TRAI
Jio recently sent a letter to TRAI, highlighting the need to revise Satcom papers. In the letter, Jio emphasized the importance of ensuring fair competition between satellite and terrestrial services.
Jio Chairman AK Lahoti wrote, “There should be a decision regarding the level playing field between satellite and terrestrial services to avoid any discrepancies.” Questions have also been raised regarding the auctioning of airwaves and the allocation of satellite spectrum, echoing similar demands made by Starlink.
TRAI had previously discussed satellite spectrum allocation on September 27, where it was mentioned that the allocation could be made without auctions—a decision that some companies opposed.
Elon Musk Starlink’s License Request
The debate around licenses continues, with demands from both Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. These companies are pushing for universal access to satellite services. Starlink has already deployed 200 satellites, putting it ahead in the race. Musk himself has shared his plans to enter the Indian market via social media platform ‘X’. This indicates that Starlink is well-positioned to make significant strides in India’s satellite network space.
As the race to roll out satellite networks accelerates, the upcoming decisions by TRAI and DoT could have far-reaching implications for India’s telecommunications landscape.
