An industry veteran, Darshan Mehta is credited with building and expanding Reliance Brands Ltd. (RBL) into India’s largest player in the premium-to-luxury fashion and lifestyle segment. Under his leadership, RBL partnered with over 50 global brands, including Ermenegildo Zegna, Giorgio Armani, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Burberry, and Salvatore Ferragamo.
Darshan Mehta, who was hired by Mukesh Ambani, is known to be the right hand of Isha Ambani and helped her run a business of Rs 8.381 lakh crore.
However, as on November 2024, Darshan Mehta was planning to step down from his role after nearly two decades of leading the business. Mehta, who has been with RBL since its inception in 2007, will now transition into a mentorship role within the Reliance Group. According to Times Of India’s report, he will now mentor next-generation leaders while also helping to identify and explore untapped business opportunities. Mehta will continue to serve as a non-executive director on the RBL board.
RBL under the guidance of Darshan Mehta currently operates 420 mono-brand boutiques and 350 shop-in-shops across more than 60 Indian cities, employing over 5,000 people at its stores and 750 in corporate offices.
Darshan Mehta Early Career
Before joining Reliance, Mehta worked at Arvind Brands, where he launched renowned sportswear labels like Tommy Hilfiger, Gant, and Nautica in India during the early 2000s. A chartered accountant and cost & works accountant, Mehta began his career with Price Waterhouse, Mumbai, and later held a senior leadership position at Trikaya Grey Advertising, now part of WPP.
Mehta’s vision and strategic leadership have left a lasting legacy in shaping India’s premium retail market. Currently, Mehta divides his time between Mumbai, Delhi, and London, continuing to guide RBL as it explores new frontiers in the luxury retail sector.
Isha Ambani, the head of Reliance Retail Ventures Limited oversees the broader retail operations. Darshan Mehta was also considered as her mentor and right hand man or close aide, who guided her after she had joined the company.
