India’s car market hit a new record in September 2025, with homegrown automakers Tata Motors and Mahindra achieving their best-ever monthly sales. According to data from the government’s Vahan portal, Tata Motors climbed to the second spot in overall vehicle registrations, moving ahead of Mahindra and Hyundai, while Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the market by a wide margin.
As per the data, Tata registered 40,594 vehicles in September, followed by Mahindra with 37,015 and Hyundai with 35,443. Maruti Suzuki remained India’s top-selling carmaker.
In terms of retail sales, Tata’s performance was even stronger. The company sold 60,907 cars in September, its highest-ever monthly total, marking a 47 per cent jump compared to the same month last year.
The Nexon compact SUV led the way with over 22,500 units sold, while the Punch micro SUV also continued to perform well, helping Tata maintain strong sales momentum.
The Tata Nexon has been one of the most reliable performers in India’s SUV market for years. It held the title of India’s best-selling SUV for three consecutive years, with 1.24 lakh units sold in FY22, 1.72 lakh in FY23, and 1.71 lakh in FY24. Though sales dropped slightly to 1.63 lakh units in FY25, the model continues to be a strong player. In the first half of FY26 alone (April–September), Nexon sales have already crossed 90,000 units. The September sales record has only boosted its popularity in the highly competitive SUV market.
A key reason for the sales spike in September was the new GST 2.0 structure, which reduced Nexon’s price by up to Rs. 1.55 lakh. Tata also offered additional benefits worth around Rs. 45,000, making the car even more appealing. With its starting price now at Rs. 7.32 lakh (ex-showroom), the Nexon is attracting buyers not just from its own category, but also from both lower and higher segments.
Mahindra recorded its highest-ever monthly sales in September 2025, selling 56,233 vehicles. This marks a 10% increase year-on-year from 51,602 units in September 2024 and a massive 42 per cent rise compared to August 2025’s 39,399 units. The company’s strong SUV lineup continues to drive its growth, keeping demand steady across urban and rural markets.
While Hyundai India slipped to the No. 3 spot, the brand still achieved a record month for its SUV range. The company sold 51,547 units in September, a 0.9 per cent rise from last year and a 17 per cent jump over August 2025.
The Creta was the clear leader, recording its best-ever monthly sales at 18,861 units, while the Venue compact SUV followed with 11,484 units, its strongest performance in nearly two years.
