Aravind Srinivas, the co-founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, has become India’s youngest billionaire at just 31 years old. According to the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2025, his wealth is estimated at Rs. 21,190 crore, fueled mainly by the rapid rise of his AI-powered search startup, Perplexity. The platform has grown popular worldwide and now has about 22 million active users.
Srinivas joins the list alongside other young Indian entrepreneurs such as Zepto’s Kaivalya Vohra (22) and Aadit Palicha (23). The report shows that India is home to 358 billionaires and nearly 1,700 people with wealth above Rs. 1,000 crore together holding assets worth almost half of India’s GDP. Over the past two years, billionaires in the country added about Rs. 1,991 crore in wealth every single day, with India creating roughly one new billionaire every week.
The Hurun report points out that technology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and industrial products are still the biggest drivers of wealth creation in the country. For Srinivas, his success and billionaire status come down to one thing, building his own company, Perplexity AI.
Aravind Srinivas, co-founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, has built an impressive career in both research and big tech before starting his own company.
Born in Chennai, he studied at IIT Madras, completing both his undergraduate and master’s degrees, and then earned a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. During his time at Berkeley, he also taught courses on Deep Unsupervised Learning in 2020 and 2021.
Srinivas worked with some of the world’s top AI labs. In 2018, he joined OpenAI as a research intern, later spending time at Google and DeepMind in London, where he focused on reinforcement learning and contrastive learning. In 2021, he returned to OpenAI as a Research Scientist before moving on to build his own venture.
In August 2022, Srinivas co-founded Perplexity AI along with Denis Yarats and Andy Konwinski. Their vision was to create an AI-powered, chat-based search engine that delivers fast, accurate, and reliable answers using advanced models like GPT-3. The platform quickly grew in popularity and is now used by millions around the world.
Alongside running Perplexity, Srinivas has also become an angel investor. Since 2023, he has backed several AI startups, including ElevenLabs, which develops text-to-speech tools, and Suno, which creates AI-based text-to-music platforms.
