Meet India's youngest billionaires, studied at IIT, their business is..., net worth is Rs....

Age is just a number when it comes to becoming a billionaire—and Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur are proof of that. According to the Hurun Global Rich List 2025, they are India’s youngest billionaires, both aged 34. They co-founded the fintech company Razorpay, and their combined net worth is estimated at Rs. 8,643 crore (eight thousand six hundred forty-three crore rupees). Their journey began at IIT Roorkee, where they were both students. Their shared passion for technology and problem-solving led them to launch Razorpay in 2014. Their goal was to simplify digital payments in India, which was still a challenge at the time.

Worked in top companies before turning entrepreneurs

Before becoming entrepreneurs, both Kumar and Mathur had successful corporate careers.

  • Shashank Kumar worked as a Software Development Engineer at Microsoft.
  • Harshil Mathur was a Wireline Field Engineer at Schlumberger.

However, they were frustrated by the poor state of online payments in India. In fact, Mathur once mentioned on his LinkedIn profile that Razorpay was born out of their struggle with India’s inefficient online payment system.

Investors Backed Razorpay’s Rapid Growth

Razorpay quickly made its mark in India’s digital payments space. By the end of 2021, the company raised USD 375 million in a Series F funding round, pushing its valuation to USD 7.5 billion. The startup attracted investments from major players, including:

India’s Billionaire Count Is Growing

India has seen fluctuations in its billionaire population over the years.

In 2022, the country had 249 billionaires. However, due to market uncertainty, the number fell to 187 in 2023. By 2024, the trend reversed, with the count rising to 271. In 2025, the number of billionaires increased further to 284, reflecting the growing wealth in the country.

World’s Youngest Billionaire

While Kumar and Mathur are India’s youngest billionaires, the world’s youngest billionaire is Wang Zelong from China. At just 29 years old, Wang also has a net worth of Rs. 8,643 crore (eight thousand six hundred forty-three crore rupees).

Interestingly, the average age of billionaires in India is 68 years, slightly higher than the global average of 66 years, highlighting that most Indians accumulate significant wealth later in life.
