Prabhakar Raghavan, an alumnus of IIT Madras, is a shining example of Indian talent leading global innovation. A 1981 B.Tech graduate in electrical engineering, Raghavan is currently the Chief Technologist of Google, where he works closely with CEO Sundar Pichai.
After completing his undergraduate degree at IIT Madras, Raghavan moved to the United States for further education. He earned a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California and later pursued a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1986.
Raghavan began his career at IBM Research, where he worked for 14 years, including a stint as a research staff member at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center. Over the years, he developed expertise in algorithms, web search, and databases, with a research career spanning more than two decades.
Raghavan later joined Verity as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and subsequently founded and led Yahoo! Labs before joining Google in 2012.
At Google, Prabhakar Raghavan has taken on several key roles like senior Vice President for Knowledge & Information (K&I) he was overseeing products like Search, Ads, Commerce, Geo, Assistant, and Gemini.
In Ads & Commerce Teams he was driving innovation in these critical areas before his tenure in K&I. As a Vice President of Workspace in Google Cloud he led Google’s Workspace product line, enabling collaboration and productivity for millions of users worldwide.
Raghavan’s influence extends beyond Google. Recently, he joined the Board of Directors of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), furthering collaboration between the two countries.
With a career rooted in cutting-edge research and leadership in technology, Raghavan has made significant contributions to algorithms, web search, and database systems.
