T.S. Kalyanaraman was born on April 23, 1947, in Thrissur, Kerala. His family had been involved in the textile and jewelry business for generations, which gave him early exposure to the world of commerce.

At just 12 years old, Kalyanaraman began assisting his father in their textile shop, learning the fundamentals of business through customer interactions and sales. These early experiences laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey.

Kalyanaraman completed his education in commerce from Sri Kerala Varma College in Thrissur. Although he initially worked in his family’s textile business, he saw greater potential in the gold and jewelry market, which was both larger and more lucrative. Founding Of Kalyan Jewellers

In 1993, Kalyanaraman invested Rs 75 lakh to open the first Kalyan Jewellers store in Thrissur. At the time, the Indian jewelry market lacked transparency, with customers often uncertain about gold purity and pricing. Kalyanaraman built his business model around addressing these issues.

He introduced BIS-hallmarked gold and a price-tagging system that clearly detailed the weight, purity, and making charges of each item. This approach was revolutionary and quickly gained customer trust. Over time, Kalyan Jewellers became synonymous with transparency and reliability, setting it apart from competitors.

Kalyan Jewellers Expansion

Kalyan Jewellers’ success in Thrissur paved the way for rapid expansion across South India and eventually the entire country. The brand also established a significant presence in the Middle East, with stores in Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman.

Today, Kalyan Jewellers is India’s second-largest jewelry retailer, with over 277 stores globally. Its market capitalization, as of February 10, 2025, stands at Rs 53,770 crore.

Kalyan Jewellers is known for its star-studded marketing campaigns. Bollywood legends Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, alongside actors like Katrina Kaif, Prabhu Ganesan, and Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna have been associated with the brand. 

T.S. Kalyanaraman Net Worth 

T.S. Kalyanaraman’s business acumen has placed him among India’s wealthiest individuals. As of February 10, 2025, his net worth is estimated at $3.8 billion (Rs 33,235 crore), making him the 60th richest person in India, according to Forbes.

Kalyanaraman didn’t limit himself to the jewelry industry. He founded Kalyan Developers, a real estate venture focusing on housing projects across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

Kalyanaraman’s wife, Ramadevi, has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. The couple has two sons, Rajesh and Ramesh, who now manage Kalyan Jewellers, and a daughter involved in the family business.
