The story of Chandubhai Virani, founder of Balaji Wafers Pvt. Ltd., is a remarkable tale of perseverance, hard work, and entrepreneurial vision. Born into a humble Gujarati farming family, Chandubhai started his career doing odd jobs to support his family. From repairing cinema seats and pasting movie posters to selling snacks in theaters for Rs 1,000 a month, his journey to building a Rs 5,000 crore snack empire is nothing short of extraordinary.
Chandubhai’s family faced severe financial challenges, which pushed him to take up various small jobs. His first attempt at running a business in agricultural products and equipment ended in failure, leading to even more economic difficulties. Despite the setbacks, Chandubhai refused to give up and continued to search for opportunities to build a better life.
While working odd jobs, Chandubhai realized he wanted to do something bigger. He started experimenting with making potato chips at home. Encouraged by positive feedback from the local community, he decided to take his small venture to the next level.
In 1982, Chandubhai took a bold step by securing a Rs 1.5 lakh loan from a bank to set up his first potato wafer manufacturing unit. The success of this small factory motivated him to expand further. In 1992, he partnered with his brother to establish Balaji Wafers Pvt. Ltd., which became the cornerstone of their snack empire.
Today, Balaji Wafers is one of India’s leading snack manufacturers, with an extensive range of products that cater to diverse tastes. The company processes 65 lakh kilograms of potatoes and 100 lakh kilograms of namkeen annually. Its production facilities are state-of-the-art, producing 3,400 kilograms of chips every hour.
Balaji Wafers has carved a niche for itself in India’sRs 43,800 crore snack market, commanding a 12% market share, making it the third-largest snack company in the country. By March 2023, the company reported an annual turnover of Rs 5,000 crore.
The company employs over 7,000 people, with 50% of its workforce comprising women. This emphasis on creating employment opportunities has further enhanced Balaji Wafers’ reputation as a socially responsible company.
Chandubhai Virani’s life underscores the power of determination, vision, and resilience. Today, Balaji Wafers is not just a successful business; it’s a symbol of what can be achieved with hard work and an unwavering belief in one’s dreams.
