Omkar Singh Kanwar was born in Pakistan and his family suffered the pain of partition. He was born in Sialkot in 1942 and is the eldest son of Apollo Tyres co-founder Raunak Singh. His family came to India during the partition. His father started a pipe business in India and sent his son Omkar to the United States for higher studies. After completing his studies, Omkar worked in the US for some time but returned to India in the year 1964. He then joined his family business. Omkar’s family decided to expand the business and step into the tyre manufacturing business, this idea laid the foundation of Apollo Tyres.
The business started pretty well, but due to the imposition of an emergency in 1975, it faced losses, DNA reported. The situation became so worse that at that time, Omkar’s father was ready to sell the company for just Rs 1. Then Omkar Singh took the responsibility of Apollo Tyres and saved it from bankruptcy
