Adel Sajan’s father believed in grooming him for the business world from a young age. At just 13, Adel began working in Danube’s warehouse in Deira under strict supervision. By 17, he accompanied the outdoor sales staff to Al Quoz warehouses, gaining hands-on experience in the business.
At 18, he was involved in the creation of the Danube catalog at Dubai Media City, marking his early foray into marketing. His first significant role came at 19 when he was entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the chandelier department. Adel’s father sent him to China to kickstart his journey, providing him with early exposure to international business. By the time he graduated, Adel had built a robust foundation in warehousing, sales, marketing, and management.
Adel is an alumnus of the Owners and President’s Management Program at Harvard Business School. Despite his privileged background, he faced skepticism about his abilities as the son of an established businessman. When he took charge of Danube Group’s retail department, he was often seen as just “the chairman’s son.”
However, Adel was determined to prove his worth. He aspired to achieve such success that people would refer to his father as “Adel’s dad.” This ambition, coupled with his vision, helped him navigate significant challenges, including financial losses in the early days of the retail division.
Adel’s innovative strategies, such as introducing e-learning and e-commerce, propelled Danube’s growth. He also fostered a unique work culture by organizing employee reward trips to destinations like Bali and Australia, aligning with Danube’s “One Team, One Goal” philosophy. Under his leadership, the business grew tenfold. He has built a net worth of Rs. 1600 crore.
Adel’s personal life has been as extravagant as his professional achievements. He married Sana Khan in a grand multi-destination wedding that reportedly cost Rs. 100 crore. The couple first met during a fashion show in high school and reconnected six years later during Ramadan. Adel proposed to Sana on a private beach, followed by a lavish engagement at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.
Adel became the director of Danube Group in 2009 and is now its Group Managing Director, leading its global expansion. His efforts earned him the prestigious Gold Award for Entrepreneur of the Year at the Middle East F&B Excellence Awards in 2024.
Adel also made waves as an investor on Shark Tank Dubai. Reflecting on his experience, he said: “Being a Shark was an incredible experience, as I’ve been a fan of the show since childhood. As an investor, I focus on two key factors: the entrepreneur’s drive — distinguishing between mere enthusiasm and informed passion — and the business fundamentals like scalability, customer acquisition cost (CAC), and financial metrics. I can typically gauge these elements within five minutes, helping me identify ventures with real potential.”
