N Chandrasekaran, the current Chairman of Tata Sons– the holding company that runs the Tata Group– started out from humble beginnings and rose to the very top of India’s largest conglomerate after Ratan Tata — the legendary Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group, who passed away in October last year– decided to step down.
Born in a farming family in 1963 in Mohanur in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, completed his early education at a government school and later earned bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, and then pursued a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree at the Regional Engineering College in Tiruchirappalli.
Chandrasekaran’s journey with the Tata Group began in 1987 when he joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as an intern, and quickly rose through the ranks to become Chief Operating Officer (COO) in September 2007. In October 2009, at just 46 years of age, N Chandrasekaran was appointed as the CEO of TCS.
N Chandrasekaran worked closely with Ratan Tata for the majority of his career and the two men developed a deep bond and personal friendship backed by mutual respect. When Tata decided to step down from an active leadership role in the group, he picked N Chandrasekaran, his close confidant and friend to lead the company into the future, and appointed him as the Chairman.
Recently, months after Ratan Tata’s demise, N Chandrasekaran shared a fond memory of the late Tata Group Chairman Emeritus, recalling how the beloved industrialist always made it a made it a point to personally receive Chandrasekaran, and see him off, whenever he went to meet him.
“In the last few years, he was not well. We met twice a week or even more. There was not a single occasion where he didn’t come to the door to receive me or see me off. I told him, ‘Sir, you don’t have to do this.’ But he would insist. This was his courtesy. For him, doing the right thing was important. Every time he made a decision, he would put himself in the shoes of others to ensure he was being fair,” the Tata Sons boss said at 25th ET Awards for Corporate Excellence where Ratan Tata was posthumously honored with the ‘Jewel of India’ award.
In a documentary titled ‘Working: What We Do All Day,’ hosted by former US President Barack Obama that premiered on Netflix in May last 2023, N Chandrasekaran offered glimpses into his personal life, revealing how he was a essentially raised on a farm in rural Tamil Nadu, and worked in family’s fields as a kid,
Chandrasekaran revealed that upon growing up, he chose to pursue a different career path that ultimately led him to where he is right, at the very top of the Tata Group, India’s largest conglomerate.
While there is no publicly available data about the wealth possessed by N Chandrasekaran, various reports have pegged his net worth to be around $100 million (around Rs 855.9 crore). As per reports, the Tata Sons Chairman took home an annual salary of Rs 65 crore in 2019, which increased to Rs 109 crore in 2021-2022, and is likely to have witnessed a further increment since then.
N Chandrasekaran lives in a lavish duplex flat in Mumbai which he reportedly purchased for Rs 98 crore in 2020. The place is located near Rs 15000 crore Antilia mansion — the home of Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, his wife Nita Ambani, and their children.
