Tesla’s CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, has set a new record in executive compensation by earning $139.5 million (around Rs 1,139 crore) in 2024. This is one of the largest CFO compensation packages in history; it’s mainly due to stock options and equity awards.
Base Salary: $400,000 (approx. Rs 3.2 crore).
Equity-Based Earnings: The majority of his income came from stock options and equity awards granted after his promotion to CFO in 2023.
Stock Performance: Tesla’s stock price increased from $250 during the award period to $342 by May 2025 as per the value of his equity.

Taneja’s CFO compensation package also broke the $86 million record set by Nikola’s CFO in 2020. Despite declining EV demand, low profit margins, and huge competition his package has increased more.He did Bachelor of Commerce from Delhi University (1999) then did Chartered Accountant from ICAI (2000) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from the USA (2006).
He worked as Senior Manager in PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and as Vice President and later Corporate Controller in SolarCity before Tesla acquired it in 2016. He joined Tesla in 2017 and handled the integration of SolarCity, and held key financial roles before becoming CFO in 2023.
Now he is Tesla’s CFO and also the Director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd and looking after Tesla’s expansion into India.
Tesla’s compensation is considered as high when they are facing challenges in the EV industry. The company is also facing scrutiny over CEO Elon Musk’s $56 billion compensation package.
