Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella finally breaks silence on firing over 9000 employees layoffs, says, ‘weighing heavily on me…’

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has finally addressed a concern that has been weighing heavily on the minds of employees. Earlier this month, the tech giant laid off nearly 9,000 employees, but at the time, the company did not issue any broad internal communication regarding the move.

According to a report by The Verge, Nadella has now spoken about the issue, saying, “Before anything else, I want to speak to what’s been weighing heavily on me and what I know many of you are thinking about: the recent job eliminations.”

While Nadella did not confirm whether the layoffs would continue, he stated that Microsoft’s total workforce remains “largely unchanged” despite the recent cuts. “By every objective measure, Microsoft is thriving—our market performance, strategic positioning, and growth all point up and to the right,” he wrote.

“We’re investing more in CapEx than ever before. Our overall headcount is relatively unchanged, and some of the talent and expertise in our industry and at Microsoft is being recognised and rewarded at levels never seen before. And yet, at the same time, we’ve undergone layoffs,” Nadella added.

Microsoft’s Future Plans

He described the situation as “the enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value.” He went on to say: “Progress isn’t linear. It’s dynamic, sometimes dissonant, and always demanding. But it’s also a new opportunity for us to shape, lead through, and have a greater impact than ever before.”

In his memo, Nadella outlined three core priorities for Microsoft are security, quality, and AI transformation. He emphasized that security has become the number one priority, particularly in light of recent cyberattacks and growing concerns over cybersecurity. “There can be no compromise on security and quality,” he noted. “Our infrastructure and services are mission-critical to the world, and we cannot move forward without them.”
