The retail segment might soon witness an intense rivalry between Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance and Gautam Adani’s Adani Group. Adani Group is set to acquire the well-known ketchup brand, Tops, marking a significant move in the FMCG space.
Gautam Adani already has a strong presence in the FMCG sector through Fortune, a brand that has successfully catered to the demand for edible oils and grocery essentials. The addition of Tops known for ketchup and other food products will further enhance the company’s portfolio. This move appears to be a challenge for Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance’s who are trying to capture the retail market. Gautam Adani can challenge Reliance’s dominance in this space.
Reliance Retail and Reliance Brands have aggressively acquired several smaller brands in recent years to build a stronghold in the FMCG and grocery markets. Their Campa Cola relaunch was a game-changer, creating challenges for major cola companies. Also Reliance’s launch of the Independence brand introduced a complete range of grocery products, directly competing with brands like Fortune (Adani Group).
Adani Group’s FMCG arm, Adani Wilmar Limited, announced on Tuesday that it will acquire GD Foods Manufacturing, the company behind the Tops brand. The deal is already signed and will be executed in phases. Initially, Adani Wilmar will acquire 80% of GD Foods’ shares, with the remaining 20% to be acquired over the next three years.
GD Foods reported a revenue of Rs 386 crore in FY 2023–24, with an EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) of Rs 32 crore. This acquisition is expected to boost Adani Wilmar’s capabilities and expand its reach in the FMCG market.
Established in 1984, GD Foods has built a strong presence in North India over the past four decades. The Tops brand is a household name in seven northern states, with products available in over 1,50,000 retail shops. By bringing Tops under its umbrella, Adani Group aims to leverage this extensive network while further strengthening its FMCG portfolio.
Anshu Malik, MD and CEO of Adani Wilmar, stated, “The acquisition of GD Foods aligns with our vision. It will help expand our portfolio to meet the emerging needs of Indian households.”
While Reliance has already established itself as a formidable player with its innovative strategies, Adani’s acquisition of Tops signals its determination to compete head-on.
