India-UK Trade Deal: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is on an India visit. It is a crucial visit amid a time of uncertainty in the economy due to US tariffs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met his British counterpart in Mumbai. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade and strategic cooperation between India and the UK, signing a series of agreements. While addressing business leaders at an event, Starmer stated that the trade partnership between the countries is crucial. He said the agreement is expected to generate trade worth 25.5 billion pounds between India and the UK, highlighting that it is Britain’s largest trade mission to date.
The British PM talked about a trade agreement, signed between both countries in July, which majorly reduces tariffs on textiles, whiskey, and cars. The agreement between India and the UK will establish zero tariffs on the entire trade value, which will directly benefit Indian businesses. The deal will benefit Indian businesses by providing easier and more profitable sales of their products in British market.
The trade deal is expected to boost employment opportunities in sectors like – textile, footwear, sports goods, and engineering. The deal will create lower to higher-level jobs for thousands of people, further strengthening both countries economically.
Prime Minister Modi took to X and said the UK PM’s visit is a testament to the commitment of both countries to work towards a stronger and more prosperous future.
“It was a delight to welcome my friend, PM Keir Starmer at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. Being his first visit to India, it is surely a special occasion. The presence of the largest business delegation to India makes it even more special and illustrates the strong potential of India-UK ties,” PM Modi said.
