The AI boom of the last two years has been dominated by tech giants like Google and Microsoft. However, a new contender, Perplexity AI, has emerged, aiming to challenge these big giants. Led by founder Aravind Srinivas, this “answer engine” is positioning itself as a biggest competitor in the search and advertising landscape, long dominated by Google.

Perplexity AI Rapid Rise 

Perplexity AI has seen phenomenal growth, with its valuation skyrocketing from $1 billion at the start of 2024 to $9 billion by December, following a $500 million funding round. The company has raised a total of $913 million, far surpassing other AI startups like Neeva, which managed just $77 million before closing down in 2023. With over 15 million active users, Perplexity’s clean and comprehensive answers are winning over those frustrated with Google’s ad-heavy results.

Perplexity generates revenue through $20 a month subscriptions, achieving $30 million in annual recurring revenue within its first year. Now, the company is venturing into advertising, aiming to tap into Google’s core business.

Aravind Srinivas’s Strategic Bet On AI 

Srinivas believes that informational queries will increasingly lead to purchase decisions, offering immense potential for monetization. “Almost 80% of Google searches are not monetizable,” he notes, but argues that building user trust with non-commercial queries is critical for sustaining ad revenue.

He focuses on a future where ads will target AI agents tasked with consumer decisions, reshaping the ad economy to cater to algorithms rather than people. This forward-thinking strategy could redefine online advertising and challenge Google’s dominance.

Perplexity AI VS Google

Srinivas doesn’t frame Perplexity as a direct threat to Google, maintaining that “it’s not a zero-sum game.” However, he does predict a decline in Google’s role as an organizer of information, with much of its current traffic driven by users navigating to other sites like TikTok and Facebook.

Srinivas’ approach to competition is as diplomatic as it is strategic. Having worked at both OpenAI and Google, he’s cultivated strong relationships within Silicon Valley, earning support from prominent figures like Jeff Bezos, Yann LeCun, and Jeff Dean. Elon Musk even praised Srinivas for his hiring restraint, as Perplexity employs just 147 people compared to the 74 Neeva had when it shut down.

In an industry where promising AI startups are often acquired by tech giants, Perplexity stands out for its independence. While companies like Inflection AI and Character AI have been absorbed by Microsoft and Google, respectively, Perplexity’s strong financial backing and Srinivas’ savvy leadership give it a unique edge.
