New Delhi, December 5: Cab-hailing platform Ola announced that it will provide free medical insurance and health check-ups to its driver partners. As per reports, Ola will offer all its drivers a medical cover of Rs two lakh for themselves and their family. Ola, in a statement, said that the medical insurance would cover hospitalisation and other major medical expenses. Over 2.5 lakh drivers on the Ola platform will benefit from this initiative. The company further added that apart from medical insurance, Ola will also offer free health check-up to drivers every quarter.
The medical insurance programmes have already been rolled out in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The firm said that it will be extending the facilities to Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune and Chennai followed by other cities in the next few weeks. In 2014, the Bangaluru-based firm had set aside a fund of Rs 100 crore towards investment in the driver ecosystem to help nurture them as entrepreneurs.
Earlier this week, Ola announced the launch of a new service called ‘Pedal’, a bicycle sharing service launched initially in IIT Kanpur campus last month. Ola claims the Pedal service to be India’s first-of-its-kind bicycle sharing service. The company has posted a video on ‘Pedal’ showing that it can be used for distances that are not far but too far to walk like within college campuses, corporate parks or residential complexes. Users can look for the Ola bicycles on the app and book a ride. Using Aadhaar/QR codes, users can authenticate themselves and unlock these ‘Made in India’ bicycles and upon reaching their destination, lock it again.
The Ola Pedal aims to solve larger issues like pollution and congestion in cities, especially for short distance trips. “We are piloting Ola Pedal in various campuses, to begin with. Bicycles are a sustainable and efficient alternative for covering first and last mile mobility needs in our cities,” an Ola spokesperson was quoted by PTI.
