Mumbai, May 15: Linking the PAN card to Aadhaar card has been made mandatory for taxpayers by the government under the Finance Act 2017. For this, the Income Tax department had earlier this week launched a simplified process to link PAN card with Aadhaar card where an individual can carry out the entire procedure in three simple steps. Under the Finance Act, 2017, it is mandatory for the taxpayers to link their PAN to the 12-digit Aadhaar or the enrolment ID at the time of application to file their returns. But what if your PAN card details and Aadhaar card details have errors? Worry not! Here’s the trick.
The income tax department on Sunday launched an online facility to correct errors in names and other details in permanent account number (PAN) and Aadhaar document. With this, the taxpayer can correct the errors without any hassle. As per details on the Income Tax department website, incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, the department has mentioned two separate hyperlinks- one to update changes in existing PAN data and second to update your Aadhaar card details.
1. To correct errors in names and other details in permanent account number (PAN) and Aadhaar document, the taxpayer will need to visit the Income Tax department website- incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on the link on the left pane which states ‘Links to correct Name’. It is just below the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option.

2. Once the taxpayer clicks on the Links to correct Name, two separate links will appear. The first one says to update your PAN details or apply for a new PAN card and the second link says to update your Aadhaar card details.

3. If individual clicks on the PAN card update link, an online PAN application would appear where he/she is supposed to fill the form with complete details. The individual can select from the options available if he wishes to make corrections in the existing PAN card or make a new one.

4. If the individual clicks on the second hyperlink which is to update Aadhaar details, he/she will have to log in into ‘Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal’ using the unique identity number. Once this is done, the individual can then upload scanned documents as proof for correcting data.

The linking of the PAN to Aadhaar card will help the government to verify the link between the beneficiary and the eligible income group. The Aadhaar card has been made mandatory for applying for PAN or permanent account number with effect from July 1, 2017. The Income Tax Department said in an email to taxpayers said, “Taxpayers are requested to use the simplified process to complete the linking of Aadhaar with PAN immediately. This will be useful for E-Verification of Income Tax returns using OTP sent to their mobile registered with Aadhaar”. The linking of PAN to Aadhaar card will help the government to keep track of individual tax payers and their consumption of subsidised utilities. Taxpayers are requested to use the simplified process to complete the linking of Aadhaar with PAN immediately and check for errors if any.
