Power Companies Hike Electricity Tariffs In Delhi; Check Revised Rates Here

Electricity tariffs have been hiked in areas of Delhi served by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL).

Delhi Power Tariff: Power companies have hiked electricity tariffs in Delhi, affecting median households and small businesses in the national capital which are bearing the brunt of the hike which has steadily gone up since May 1 this year.

According to reports, tariffs have been increased in areas served by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), while Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited has not hiked its prices, yet.

BRPL, which serves South and West Delhi, has increased power tariffs by 8.75 percent, while areas in East and Central Delhi, which are served by the BYPL, have witnessed a slightly lower hike of 6.15 percent, data showed.

The increased rates will be in effect for a three-month period viz. May-July 2024, after which the new tariffs will be reviewed by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) and maybe readjusted based on the prevailing situation.

The tariff hike is being attributed to Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC), the adjustment made by power distribution companies to cover the cost of purchasing the electricity from power generation companies.

The total PPAC, which varies for various power distribution companies serving Delhi, inevitably lead to increase or decrease in electricity bills for the customer as costs incurred in purchasing the electricity are invariably transferred to them.

As per available data, below is the PPAC of Delhi’s power distribution firms in the May-July 2024 period;

• NDMC: 38 percent
• TPDDL: 37.88 percent
• BYPL: 37.75 percent
• BRPL: 35.83 percent

The total PPAC includes the previous one on past dues and additional current PPAC, with NDMC and TPDDL each adding 8.75% to their existing rates, BYPL adding 6.15%, and BRPL adding 8.75%.

The hike in power tariffs comes amid a scorching summer during which a record-breaking heatwave was witnessed in the national capital, resulting in humongous power bills due to the constant use of air conditioning and other electricity-guzzling cooling devices.
