Ratan Tata’s Birthday: 28 December is a very special date in the history of Indian business, as it marks the birthday of the late Ratan Tata, a legendary businessman and great philanthropist. He was not just a businessman but a man whom every countryman loved. Tata who is lovingly known as the ‘Gentle Giant’, played a crucial role in highlighting India’s name on the world forum in several ways. But did you know that Tata began his career by shoveling and carrying lime? On his birthday today, let’s learn about Ratan Tata’s first job, which taught him the true power of a company and helped him become a legendary businessman.
Ratan Tata joined Tata Steel in the year 1962, but he didn’t receive a prestigious position. He didn’t even have an office. At the Jamshedpur plant, he had to stand with labourers and work. At the plant, Ratan used to wield shovels and carry lime like a common worker.
While working with workers, Ratan Tata learned that the true strength of any company lies not in big machines but in its people, the workers who work day and night for the company. That is the reason why, when he led the Tata Group, the well-being of his employees remained his top priority.
There are instances when he raised the salaries of workers and employees despite the fact that the company faced losses.
During his early career, Ratan was given the responsibility of companies like NELCO and Empress Mills. These companies were not performing well and were making losses. The situation was so dire that managing these companies became difficult for him. This was the time when Ratan Tata faced considerable criticism. People raised fingers on leadership skills. But these criticisms didn’t affect him.
In the year 1981, Ratan Tata was given the reins of Tata Industries, and after 10 years in 1991, he became chairman of the entire Tata Group. This was the time when people witnessed his leadership quality and became fans of his decision-making skills.
Tata, breaking the stereotype, distanced itself from old and non-essential businesses and started focusing on future sectors such as – IT, automobiles, and retail.
Under his leadership, the Tata Group introduced India’s first indigenous car – Indica. Tata didn’t stop there and dreamt of Nano, the most affordable car.
However, Nano wasn’t a huge success in the market, but it demonstrated to the world the capabilities of Indian engineering.
Ratan Tata was the driving force which led the Tata Group from a normal company to USD100 billion company. Currently, the Tata Group’s market value exceeds USD445 billion.
Ratan Tata passed away on 9 October 2024 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
