Nusserwanji Tata (1822-1886)
The Tata family began with Nusserwanji Tata, a Parsi priest who founded the business. Nusserwanji Tata sowed the seeds of the Tata Group, which later became the largest empire in Indian industry. His wife was Jivanabai Cowasji Tata, and they had five children, the most prominent of whom is Jamsetji Tata.
Jamsetji Tata (1839-1904)
Jamsetji Tata is known as the “Father of Indian Industry”. He founded the Tata Group and began to set up industries in India. Companies such as Tata Steel, Tata Hotels, and Hydropower Business were established under his leadership. His wife was Hirabai Daboo, and he had three children – Sir Dorabji Tata, Dhunbai Tata, and Sir Ratanji Tata.
Dorabji Tata (1859-1932)
Jamsetji Tata’s elder son Dorabji Tata took over the reins of the Tata Group after his death. He played an important role in establishing companies like Tata Steel and Tata Power and took the Tata Group forward.
Ratanji Tata (1871-1918)
Jamsetji’s younger son Ratanji Tata played a major role in the expansion of the Tata Group. He made significant contributions especially in the cotton and textile business. Ratanji and his wife Navajbai Tata did not have any biological children, but they adopted their nephew Naval Hormasji Tata in 1920. Naval Tata also later took the Tata Group to new heights.
Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy (JRD) Tata (1904-1993)
JRD Tata was the son of Ratanji Tata and French woman Suzanne. He served as the chairman of the Tata Group for 50 years. JRD Tata’s major achievements include the establishment of Tata Airlines, later known as Air India. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded in many areas.
Naval Tata (1904-1989)
Naval Tata was adopted by his uncle Ratanji Tata. He also worked in many important positions in the Tata Group. Naval Tata’s first marriage was with Sooni Commissariat, from whom he had two children – Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata. His second marriage was with Simone Tata, from whom his son Noel Tata was born.
Ratan Tata (1937-2024)
Ratan Tata was the son of Naval Tata and Sooni Tata. Ratan Tata led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012 and transformed the Tata Group into a global brand. Under his leadership, the Tata Group made significant moves in the automobile and defense sector, including the acquisition of Tata Nano and Tata Motors. Ratan Tata did not marry in his life and will always be remembered for his visionary leadership.
Noel Tata (born 1957)
Noel Tata is the half-brother of Ratan Tata and the son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata. Noel Tata has also played important roles in various Tata Group companies. He led companies such as Tata International and Trent. His wife Aloo Mistry is the sister of former Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry.

Jimmy Tata
Jimmy Tata, Ratan Tata’s younger brother, also lived a bachelor’s life. He was not directly associated with the Tata Group and lived a private life.

Noel Tata’s wife is Aloo Mistry and they have three children Maya Tata, Neville Tata, and Leah Tata.
