Ratan Tata took over the reins in 1991, facing challenges that were necessary for finding solutions for the company’s growth. He reorganized the structure of the company, which had a turnover of Rs 4,900 crore at that time. He discovered that a few individuals within the company had positioned themselves as power centers.
This became a major challenge for him, but he removed three officials from the company: Russy Modi of Tata Steel, Darbari Seth of Tata Chemicals, and Ajit Kelkar of Indian Hotels.
The reasons behind the removal of these three officials included their opposition to the changes made by Ratan Tata, a lackadaisical approach to business innovation, and a management style that did not align with Ratan Tata’s working methodology.
Another controversy arose with Cyrus Mistry, who was given the charge after Ratan Tata stepped down as chairman. Mistry took several steps that were not welcomed by the Tata Group and was shown the door on October 24, 2016, during a board meeting. There was also a dispute with the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, which held an 18% stake in Tata Sons and had been associated with the company for the past 70 years. In 2020, the Mistry Group expressed their wish to sell their 18% stake.
The removal of Cyrus Mistry was a complex issue. It is believed that management, business strategy, and personal differences were the main reasons behind his exit. Cyrus Mistry had approached the Supreme Court to challenge his removal, but the court ultimately ruled in favor of Tata Sons
