Ratan Tata included a provision in his will that mirrors a similar action taken by the Maharaja of the Gwalior dynasty, Madho Rao Scindia, a century earlier. The Maharaja’s will also sparked widespread discussion at the time. In his will, Ratan Tata mentioned his pet German Shepherd, Tito, stating that he would receive ‘unlimited’ care for life, along with all the comforts.
It can be understood through an example how much Ratan Tata loves his pet dog Tito. Ratan Tata had to receive a Lifetime Achievement award from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace in 2018. Tito was unwell and Ratan Tata chose not to attend the award function. Ratan Tata’s friend Suhel Seth revealed the story during an interview. Suhel was surprised to hear that he could not attend the award ceremony because his pet was not keeping well.
Suhel mentioned that he had seen 11 missed calls from Ratan Tata. When he called him back, Tata simply apologized and explained that he couldn’t attend the ceremony because his pet was unwell.
Similarly, King Madho Rao Scindia of Gwalior dynasty also loved his dog, Hassu. Hassu always accompanied him wherever he visited. In 1925, when he got ill in Paris, he was worried about his pet, Hassu.
Author Rashid Kidwai mentions in his book ‘The House of Scindiaraj’ that the King called his wife and asked her to provide ‘unlimited’ care for his pet dog. He also included his dog in his will, allocating a substantial amount of money for its care before he passed away on June 5, 1925.
