New Delhi, August 24: A month after the launch of an affordable ‘intelligent’ JioPhone, pre-bookings for the feature phone will start at 5.30 PM on August 24. The JioPhone is set to usher in a new era of innovation for the feature phone market in India. Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani in July had announced the launch of a 4G-enabled feature phone priced at effective zero during the Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL) 40th annual general meeting (AGM) in Mumbai.  Ambani said the phone which is targeted at 50 crore feature phone users in the country, will be available for pre-booking from August 24 on payment of a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500. He further informed that this deposit will be refunded after 36 months on the return of the phone, he said, adding that the price of the phone will be “effective zero”. With an aim to woo 50 crore low-income users to his 10-month old Jio is offering services that include life-long free voice calls with cheap data. Reliance Jio took the telecom sector by surprise after its launch in September 2016.  The disruptive offers with free voice calls and data forced other rival telcos to slash their rates to retain customers. The smartphone industry is going through a massive revolution. Jio is believed to democratize the digital culture in India and digital life will no longer be the privilege of the affluent few. The feature phone market has not seen many innovations while internet connectivity grew from 2G to 4G. However, analysts are of the opinion that the JioPhone is a move to reach out to the next 100 million users as the market is big enough for Jio to target feature phone users with disruptive offers and an effective price of Rs ‘zero’ for a device.
