Mumbai, August 24: The wait for the much anticipated Reliance Jio feature phone is now over as the pre-booking for this device has started at 5.30 PM today. Reliance Jio on Wednesday tweeted saying, “The wait is over. India ka smartphone – #JioPhone is here! Pre-booking starts 24th August at 5.30PM. #WithLoveFromJio”. The revolutionary feature phone was unveiled by Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani at the Reliance Industries AGM on 21st July 2017. Jio makes India the highest quality, most affordable data market in the world and with the launch of the new JioPhone, the company aims to woo 50 crore low-income users by offering services that include life-long free voice calls with cheap data. Also Read - Mukesh Ambani Joins Bezos, Musk in Worlds Exclusive 100 Billion Club | Full List of Billionaires Here

Customers who pre-book the Reliance JioPhone will have to pay just Rs 500 as a booking amount while the rest Rs 1,000 has to be paid at the time of delivery in September. Ambani said the 4G-enabled Reliance Jio’s feature phone,  targeted at 50 crore feature phone users in the country, will be available for pre-booking from August 24 on payment of a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500. Customers who book the JioPhone are required to pay a fully refundable, one-time, security deposit of Rs 1,500 against every JioPhone to avoid potential misuse which is fully refundable after 3 years. The Reliance JioPhone will be available on a ‘first come first serve’ basis. The feature phone was already on beta testing from August 15 and was made available to only some selected people. The pre-booking of the 4G-enabled Reliance Jio’s feature phone can be done using the MyJio app or on the Jio website. Customers can also visit the Jio offline channels that include Jio retailers and multi-brand device retailers including the Reliance Digital stores network.

Ambani during the AGM said that the Jio’s network continues to rapidly expand and in the next 12 months, the company will cover 99 percent of the population. Ambani said that India’s 4G coverage will be more than its 2G coverage as the company realized it would have to release a 4G VoLTE feature phone, as even an entry level smartphone costs between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 4,500.

The smartphone industry is going through a massive revolution and after Jio’s entry in the telecom sector, the digital culture in India and digital life will no longer be the privilege of the affluent few. Analysts believe that the JioPhone is a move to reach out to the next 100 million users as the market is big enough for Jio to target feature phone users with disruptive offers and an effective price of Rs ‘zero’ for a device.

On its website, Reliance Jio mentioned that it will bring transformational changes in the Indian digital services space to enable the vision of Digital India for 1.2 billion Indians. Jio is aimed to propel India into global leadership in digital economy. As part of its customer offers, Jio has revolutionised the Indian telecom landscape by making voice calls for Jio customers absolutely free, across India, to any network, and always.
