New Delhi, August 28: After demand for the much awaited JioPhone exceeded the target, Reliance Industries (RIL) has suspended the pre-booking of the 4G VoLTE feature phone until further notice. Mukesh-Ambani led Reliance Jio has the target of making available 5 million phones a week. However, the Jio website only allows buyers to register for the 4G feature phone. The JioPhone pre-booking started on August 24 at 5.30 PM on both online and offline channels. The JioPhone was unveiled at the Reliance Industries AGM, is effectively priced zero. Customers are required to pay a one-time deposit of Rs 1,500 for the handset, to be refunded after three years on the return of the handset. It has to be noted that the JioPhone feature phone can be booked for Rs 500 and the buyer will have to pay Rs 1,000 at the time of the delivery. The pre-bookings of the JioPhone had crossed the 3 million mark within a couple of hours of opening on August 24, an ET report said. Jio has confirmed that there was an overwhelming response for the 4G VoLTE feature phone and claimed that it has received millions of booking. On its website, Reliance has confirmed that it has suspended the pre-booking for the phone stating ‘We will inform you when the pre-booking resumes’. To book a JioPhone, people can click on the link which reads ‘register now’. The website will ask you to submit personal details of the buyer such as name, phone number and email ID.  Customers who have successfully placed an order for the phone can get updates on their phones by dialing 1800-890-8900. To lure 50 crore low-income users, 10-month old Jio is offering services that include life-long free voice calls with cheap data. The JioPhone comes loaded with a number of features. It offers free voice calls for life, unlimited SMS services and half a GB of data a day for Rs 153 a month. Jio has also announced a weekly plan for Rs 53 and a two-day plan for Rs 23 for unlimited data access.  JioPhone users can also get an access to various Jio apps on music and movies. The mobile industry body, Indian Cellular Association has revealed that the total size of Indian mobile phone market was estimated to be around 280 million units in 2016 and is expected to grow to 320 million by 2018.  Taking into consideration the overwhelming response that Jio has received since its entry in September 2016, it is likely to create a major disruption in the telecom industry and may prompt other major telecom operators to come out with similar 4G feature phones in the near future.
