This businessman is the third richest person in the country. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, his net worth is $35.9 billion. But in terms of giving donations, he is far ahead of Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani.
Born on July 14, 1945 in a small village in Tamil Nadu, the businessman’s father was a district judge and used to travel all over South India due to his job. Therefore, his childhood was also spent in different places. After getting a degree in Electric and Electronics Engineering from PSG College, Coimbatore, he started his career in 1967 from Walchand Group’s College of Engineering, Pune. After this, he worked as a computer programmer with DCM Group, Delhi. But he did not like the job and in 1976, along with some of his friends, founded HCL. Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani of Reliance Industries are ahead of him. But in terms of giving donations, no one is even close to him.
He is one of the biggest industrialists in the country and his family have a 61% stake in software developer company HCL Tech through the promoter group. It is the 13th most valuable company in the country with a market cap of Rs 420,428.13 crore. He and his family also have a 63% stake in HCL Infosystems. HCL Infosystems is a computer manufacturing and service providing company. Shiv Nadar is India’s biggest philanthropist. He donated Rs 2,153 crore in the year 2024. His name is Shiv Nadar.
Delhi’s richest man
Shiv Nadar started the Shiv Nadar Foundation in 1994. Through this foundation, he established schools and universities. VidyaGyan schools are run by this foundation. These schools select talented students from rural areas and provide them free education. HCL Corp., the holding company of HCL Technologies and HCL Infosystems, raised about $125 million by selling its 2.5% stake in HCL Technologies in 2010. Nadar donated this money to his foundation. He is the richest man in Delhi.
Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) started from a garage. Under Nadar’s leadership, the company progressed by leaps and bounds and soon became a global IT services company. Today HCL has a presence in over 60 countries and employs over 2,22,000 people. In July 2020, Nadar stepped down as the company’s chairman and handed over the reins to his daughter Roshni Nadar Malhotra. He is the company’s chairman emeritus and strategic advisor.
