Nagapal shared his post on LinkedIn, “Don't build careers. Rent people. This isn't their first job. They won't retire here. Allow them to bring their beliefs and attitudes with them. Let them be and do what they couldn't where they were before. As their knowledge and confidence grows, they will learn to fly and make you soar too. And when they leave, they'll encourage others like them to join you.”
A controversy erupted after Harit Nagpal, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Play Ltd., made remarks on social media which irked its users. Nagpal described hiring employees to ‘rent’ them. His statement drew ire of netizens, but a few praised him for his insight.
Nagapal shared his post on LinkedIn, “Don’t build careers. Rent people. This isn’t their first job. They won’t retire here. Allow them to bring their beliefs and attitudes with them. Let them be and do what they couldn’t where they were before. As their knowledge and confidence grows, they will learn to fly and make you soar too. And when they leave, they’ll encourage others like them to join you.”
Nagpal’s comment drew users’ attention. A user backed his viewpoint saying that ‘Renting people’ shifts the focus to mutual growth. Letting individuals thrive benefits both them and the organization, fostering trust and innovation.
One more user wrote, “Interesting perspective, Harit. ‘Renting talent’ challenges organizations to rethink investments in people. Instead of long-term loyalty, it’s about balancing immediate goals with continuous learning.”
On the contrary, a few users take it as demeaning the talent. A user writes, “Admire your provocative thinking, Harit. People don’t stay forever, but let’s not equate a ‘rental mindset’ with treating people like property. A good leader nurtures and empowers their team.”
Another social media user wrote, “The word ‘rent’ feels harsh. It might align with business goals, but it doesn’t resonate with the idea of nurturing future generations.”
