The New Delhi Railway Station, arguably the busiest train station in India, is the highest revenue earner for the Indian Railways, raking in an impressive Rs 3337 crore in 2023-24 fiscal year, as per data shared by the national transporter. Additionally, New Delhi railway station retained its top spot as the country’s busiest railway station, ferrying a staggering 39,362,272 passengers in FY 23-24, the data revealed.
West Bengal’s Howrah Railway Station ranks second on the list of richest railway stations in India, earning Rs 1692 crore in the last fiscal, while Chennai Central (MGR station) and Vijayawada Railway Station are also ranked among the top earners for the Indian Railways.
Railway stations managed and operated by the Indian Railways earn revenue from advertisements, shops, clock rooms, waiting halls, as well as selling platform tickets.
The Indian Railways manages and operates a staggering 7,461 railway stations across the country, with Uttar Pradesh having a whopping 1,173 train stations, the highest in India, followed by Maharashtra (689), Bihar (768), Madhya Pradesh (550), and Gujarat (509).
The northeastern state of Mizoram is the sole state in India which has just one railway station.
