Has it ever happened to you that you didn’t have cash available, and your Internet connection didn’t work while trying to use your computer or mobile devices to make a purchase? If yes, know that there is now a solution for this common issue.

However, now there is another way for us to complete these types of transactions from our computers and mobile devices. You will need to follow a few steps, and then your transaction will be completed with no Internet connection at all. In this article, we will explain how you can make online payments without an Internet connection.

With a USSD-based service, you can access UPI payments even if you don’t have an internet connection. Simply dial a number on your mobile phone, and you’ll be able to make transactions like transferring funds from your bank account to someone else’s bank account. This is very useful when you’re not able to connect to a good wireless service, or if you don’t have access to mobile data, or if you use a basic phone instead of a smartphone.

To enable basic banking transactions for a wider audience, the National Payments Corporation of India has launched the feature for offline payments using text-based menus to allow customers to perform simple banking transactions without the need for the internet. Users will learn how to set up and use this feature and how to make offline payments when there is no way to access the internet. The following guide provides detailed instructions on how to activate and utilize offline UPI payments.

To use Offline UPI, simply dial *99# from any mobile phone associated with a bank account. The USSD system is useful even when you do not have access to Mobile Data or Wi-Fi. The service is supported by 83 banks and four telecoms in India. Users can choose between 13 different languages (including English and Hindi) to access the menu in their preferred language. Currently, the maximum transaction value for Offline UPI is Rs 5000 per transaction, and the customer will be charged Rs 0.50 on each transaction as a service charge.

This feature must be enabled on a registered mobile number before making an offline payment. Steps you must follow to initiate an offline payment you will need to:

  • Step 1: Dial the *99# from your mobile telephone.
  • Step 2: From one of the 13 available languages, select the language of your preference.
  • Step 3: Enter the IFSC code corresponding to the bank of your choice when prompted.
  • Step 4: Enter the number that corresponds to the bank account that you want to link, e.g., 1 or 2, etc., against the list of bank accounts associated with the mobile telephone number you registered.
  • Step 5: Enter the last six digits of your debit card along with the date of expiry for verification purposes.
  • Step 6: After verification, the offline UPI function is enabled; this feature allows a USSD command to be used for payment without having to access the internet.

To send money to someone with an offline UPI system, you need to follow these guidelines: To send money using Offline UPI, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Call *99# from your registered mobile device;
  • Step 2: Press the “Send Money” button in the menu.
  • Step 3: Provide all necessary information for the person to whom you are sending money, including their UPI ID, mobile telephone number, or a valid bank account number and the associated IFSC code.
  • Step 4: Add the amount you wish to send, not to exceed Rs 5,000;
  • Step 5: Input your PIN in order to approve the transaction.
