Mehli Mistry, a long-time ally of Ratan Tata since the early 2000s, is going to get a significant role within Tata Trusts. Currently serving as a board trustee, Mistry gained attention when he received support of Ratan Tata during the Tata-Mistry dispute, despite being the first cousin of the late Cyrus Mistry. Cyrus Mistry was ousted as chairman of Tata Sons in 2016.
According to the reports, the much-anticipated succession plan at Tata Trusts has been completed with the appointment of Noel Tata, Ratan Tata’s stepbrother, as the new chairman of the trusts. Similarly, Mehli Mistry is positioned to take on a key responsibility within the organization. As a board trustee of Tata Trusts, Mistry has been a close confidant of Ratan Tata, working alongside Srinivasan and Singh on the executive committee that oversees the trust’s operations.
Mehli Mistry Role In Tata’s Business
Beyond his involvement in Tata Trusts, Mistry is also the director of the Meher Pallonji Group, a business with diversified interests in industrial painting, dredging, stevedoring, logistics, shipping, finance, and automobile dealerships.
The Mistry cousins, Mehli and the late Cyrus, share a familial connection on their fathers’ side, as their grandfathers were brothers. While Cyrus Mistry’s family built the $2.5-billion Shapoorji Pallonji Group, known for its ventures in construction, real estate, textiles, and shipping, Mehli’s family developed the lesser-known M Pallonji Group, which focused on a different range of businesses.

With Noel Tata stepping into leadership at Tata Trusts, Mehli Mistry is expected to continue playing a crucial role in guiding the future of the trusts, maintaining the legacy and values upheld by Ratan Tata.
Who Is Noel Tata?
The 67-year-old Noel was chosen by the board to lead the string of philanthropic trusts that control the Tata empire.
Having functioned mostly under the shadows of his illustrious half-brother, Noel will now have the responsibility of leading the Tata Trusts — broadly comprising Sir Ratan Tata Trust & Allied Trusts, and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust & Allied Trusts — that hold a controlling 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, the holding and promoter firm of Tata Group companies.
He is already a trustee on the boards of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.
Noel has been involved with the Tata Group since 1999, and chairs the successful retail arm Trent, which looks after chains like Westside and Zudio and commands a market capitalisation of over Rs 2 lakh crore. He is also the chairman of Voltas and Tata International.
Noel is married to Aloo Mistry, the sister of the late Cyrus Mistry and a part of the Shapoorji Pallonji family, which is the single largest private shareholder of Tata Sons with more than 18.4 percent holding.
Noel was seen as a front runner to succeed Ratan Tata at Tata Trusts, and there was also speculation about Ratan Tata’s long-time confidante Mehli Mistry.
