After the passing of former Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata in October 2024, his iconic Colaba bungalow, ‘Halekai’ is still empty. The four-floor property, where Ratan Tata spent his final years, has become a topic of discussion now as the questions arise about who will stay in the it?

According to a Times Of India report, citing sources, suggest that Noel Tata, Ratan Tata’s stepbrother and chairman of Tata Trusts, might consider moving into the property with his family. However, others believe Noel Tata may continue staying at his current home, Windemere, located in Cuffe Parade.

Ratan Tata’s Bungalow

A 13,350-square-foot plot, ‘Halekai’ is a four-story bungalow owned by Ewart Investments, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. The bungalow was allocated to Ratan Tata in 2012 after his retirement as chairman of Tata Sons. It was designed by Ratan Tata himself along with architect Ratan Batliboi. Ratan Tata lived in this property during his last days with his German shepherds and household staff. He also used to work for Tata Trusts from here.

After Ratan Tata’s passing, the bungalow is vacant. On Sunday, a traditional Parsi ‘Chhamsi’ prayer ceremony was held over six months after his death. Some believe Noel Tata may consider relocating to Halekai to make use of the property rather than leaving it vacant.
