Today’s Google Doodle marks the official opening of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Over the next month, male national team players from 32 countries will compete for the best rankings in 12 locations in 11 cities across the country.
FIFA was founded in 1904, headquarter of FIFA is situated in Zurich. Its present membership comprises of 211 national associations. The member countries of the FIFA divided into six regional confederations, Africa, Europe, North and Central America, Asia, Oceania and South America.
FIFA World Cup is held with an interval of 4 years, all the member countries participate in the qualifying round. out of 211 countries, only top 32 countries from six regional confederations participate in the World Cup.
So far 20 editions of FIFA World Cup were held in different countries around the world. Out of which 8 countries have won the FIFA World Cup Trophy. Brazil tops the list with 5 world cup trophies, followed by Germany and Italy with 4 each, Argentina and Uruguay won two each, while France, Spain, and England won once.
While 20 of the 32 teams will make repeated appearances in the tournament, including the defending champions in Germany, this is also the first for some, including Iceland and Panama.
With a total of 64 games, the games will culminate at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on July 15. This year’s Doodle Series will celebrate the rich cultures and talents of the 32 participating countries by presenting guest artists from all nations.
