Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday became the first woman in the country to became a full-time defence minister. Earlier, Indira Gandhi handled the portfolio as Prime Minister around thirty years ago. Sitharaman’s elevation has prompted a delightful tribute from Amul. As Sitharaman heads the world’s third largest defence force of 1.4 million personnel, Amul paid tribute to the new minister in the wittiest way. Amul, known for their take on socio-political topics titled their latest ad “Defence Ministree” (stree in Hindu means woman). Amul welcomed Sitharaman as the new Defence Minister with an ad and shared it on Facebook saying, “#Amul Topical: Second woman to hold major post!”
The ad shows Sitharaman clad in a pink sari standing inside a military tank with a buttered piece of toast in her hand. The ad also reads ‘Amul: Sabka Nirmal Anand’ which can be roughly translated to mean, ‘Amul: Moment of pure bliss for everyone’. The ad became an instant hit among social media users with garnering over 10,000 likes on Facebook. In the comment section, Facebook users can be seen hailing the decision to appoint Sitharaman as the Defence Minister.
Here is the Facebook post:
Sitharaman and France’s Florence Parly are the only two women to head the defence ministry of nuclear-armed nations. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also holds the defence portfolio like former PM Indira Gandhi, who helmed the defence ministry in 1975 and again between 1980 and 1982. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandarnaike became the first woman to hold the defence portfolio in 1960.
