After the debacle of Team India losing the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 at the hands of arch- rival Pakistan, Anil Kumble has stepped down as coach of the Indian Cricket Team. There were reportedly rifts between coach Anil Kumble and Team India Captain Virat Kohli. The former Indian captain and spinner had led the team for a little over a year as the Head coach but decided not to travel with the team to West Indies where the Men in Blue are scheduled to play five ODIs and T20I. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made any confirmation as of now but Anil Kumble is definitely out of the race for the position of coach. Twitterati is not very happy with the decision and is forecasting the downfall of Virat Kohli and Indian cricket.
Anil Kumble was given the option to extend his one-year stint as the head coach of Team India by Vinod Rai, chief of CoA as the search and selection process for the new coach was ongoing. However, the cricketing legend opted to keep out of t extension invite and subsequently bowed out of the selection process too. If reports are to be believed he did not have a very good relationship with the team captain Virat Kohli and there was no hope of reconciliation. The official reason given for Anil Kumble’s absence from accompanying the team to West Indies was ICC Annual conference which started from Monday June 19, 2017 and will continue till June 23. Anil Kumble is the chairman of Cricket Committee and needs to take calls on laws and regulations of the game. India vs Bangladesh Champions Trophy 2017 semi-final match gave birth to hilarious tweets and memes!
The news of Anil Kumble’s stepping down has not been taken very positively by the Twitterati and people have been commenting on the dilemma. Sample a few tweets below:
Former India greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have been asked to select the next India coach. Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Doda Ganesh and Richard Pybus are the applicants for the position of next India coach. COA chief Vinod Rai dismissed the allegations of a spat between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli. BCCI’s decision of not renewing Anil Kumble’s contract was also a reason for this step. Anil Kumble had a successful stint as the India coach, India won 12 and lost just one of the 17 Tests in which he was leading the team. He would have automatically got an extension if not because of a rumoured rift with Captain Virat Kohli.
