SS Rajamouli helmed Bahubali film series is India’s one of the biggest movie series. The record-setting sequel Bahubali 2: The Conclusion of 2015 movie Bahubali: The Beginning will be now a case study. Yes, the movie will be a part of one of the electives in the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Students of contemporary film industry elective will be studying about the power of sequel and how a sequel can derisk a film as a marketing concept. “I will be introducing Bahubali 2 as a case study in the new academic year and it will essentially focus on the power of a sequel and how a sequel can de-risk the movie as a marketing concept,” said Professor Bharathan Kandaswamy, according to the DNA report.
“There is a research from Stanford University which says that a prequel is always considered better than the sequel but a sequel makes more money than a prequel. Sequels make more money because the producers become more marketing savvy based on the success of a prequel. My course this time will focus on marketing mantras evolving around sequels and how decisions need to be taken that respect art and creativity of a movie and yet are able to make money. Blending art, business and technology is the key,” he told. IIM Ahmedabad was the first B school to start a comprehensive elective course on the movie industry and more than 700 learners opted for the course.
The course provides a 360-degree view of the industry with special focus on production of the movie. For the uninitiated, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion released on 28 April 2017 and the magnum opus has by far minted around Rupees 1800 crores and collected Rs. 100 crores on the first day of its release. The movie had Prabhas, Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati were in the key roles. Bahubali 2 also topped Google India’s search trends and was also the top trend of last year. It also has a record of most viewed Hindi movie premiere on television.
