In a bizarre incident, rats in the dry state Bihar have become an alcoholic. In a state where drinking alcohol is a punishable offence for humans, rodents are drinking confiscated beer. Yes, you heard it right. Lately, Bihar police confiscated around 200 beer cans and kept it in a storeroom of the excise department. The beer cans were found on Monday, October 1 with neat holes on top of the cans. Kaimur police blamed the alcohol-craving rats for drinking the alcohol.

Bhabhua SDM Kumari Anupama Singh spoke to a leading news portal and said, “It looks like the doing of rats. There were around six to seven cartons in the godown and all the cans were empty.”

Kaimur DM, Nawal Kishor Choudhary blamed the rats and said, “The beer cans were gawned into by rats. If it was the work of humans then the cans would have been cut properly. We have ordered a detailed investigation into the matter.”

The SSP Manu Maharaaj ordered a probe and said, “Drunkard rodents had gulped the booze seized from people flouting prohibition laws.”

A scientist at Zoological Survey of India, Gopal Sharma gave another angle to the incident and said, “It is possible that if rats stay at a place where water is not available, they can consume liquor alternatively. But I do not agree with claims that the rodents can guzzle hundreds of litres of liquor. They cannot drink so much as they have a natural aversion to a high concentration of alcohol.”

Retired chief secretary of undivided Bihar and Jharkhand, VS Dubey blamed the police and said, “Officials are either drinking or selling it and then blaming it all on the rats.”

This is not the first time that rats have been blamed for drinking tons of liquor. In 2017, lakh litres of alcohol went missing in Patna and officials blamed the rodents for drinking it.
