Canadian politician, Jagmeet Singh, of Indian origin announced his engagement to girlfriend Gurkiran Kaur on Twitter. Singh, the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) is the first member of the minority community to lead a federal party in Canada. It is one of the three largest political parties in Canada. Singh who is also known for his fashion quotient posted pictures of the engagement along with his fiancee, with the caption, “She said yes.” He popped the question to the 27-year-old fashion designer of Indian-origin at a private party in a hotel on Tuesday in front of family and friends.

While there were speculations about Singh being in a relationship, he never publically accepted it. Talking about the engagement, Toronto Star quoted him as saying, “I’m super excited to take this step forward — to have a life and future together with my partner.” Social media was flooded with congratulatory messages to the couple after Singh tweeted the pictures.

Singh’s popularity has been rising in the recent past. He is also the first non-white politician to head a major political party in the country. He is quite a star on social media for his colourful turbans and tailor-made three-piece suits. His popularity rose after a video of him calmly responding to a woman who interrupted his campaign in Canada went viral.

The 38-year-old was elected on the first ballot to lead NDP into the 2019 federal election against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals. Singh had defeated three rivals, secured 54 percent of the vote and succeeded Thomas Mulcair to become the new head of NDP.
