71st Cannes Film festival opened yesterday by the legendary director Martin Scorsese and Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett. The annual event brings together talent from all over the world in Cannes, France.

Scorsese expressed his excitement to be back at the Cannes Film festival and he said, “I am very thrilled to be back here in Cannes again.”

He added, ” We all are here to celebrate the great art of motion pictures and it’s a great honour for me to be asked to open the festival.

He then asked Cate Blanchett to join him on stage and they together opened the festival in French which is the native language there.

It was interesting to note that the festival organisers kept the red carpet selfie free. Attendees were also asked to keep their cell phones and along with security guards keeping a close eye to prevent selfies being taken on the carpet.

Cate Blanchett also addressed the audience when she was introduced before Scorsese and said that she was honoured to be chair the prestigious jury that awards the highest film honour at Cannes known as the Palme d’Or.

The opening ceremony was held before the screening of Everybody Knows starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz who was also seen attending in the audience. This movie is a drama based on an abduction where they play ex-lovers. The movie is directed by Asghar Farhadi.

The film festival will be on till 19th May and many Indian celebrities will also be seen walking the red carpet including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Deepika Padukone etc.
