Chandra Shekhar Azad who is known as Azad was one of the great freedom fighters. He was born on July 23, 1906, in Bhawra, Madhya Pradesh. He had vowed that he would never be arrested by British and will always be Azad (free) and kept his vow by using his last bullet to shoot himself. Azad joined the freedom struggle as revolutionary at a very young age. He was moved by the violence of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy and joined Noncooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. His only goal was to get India rid of the shackles of the British. His dream was to see Independent India based on socialist principles. He also started Hindustan Socialist Republic Association along with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev.
He killed himself on this day in 1931 in Alfred Park, Allahabad after his associate betrayed him. After his death, the park was renamed as Chandra Shekhar Azad Park. February 21, 2018, marks the 87the death anniversary of Azad. He was just 24 when he died. Today, on his death anniversary, Twitter is pouring in with tributes to the leader. Here are some of the tribute tweets:
A tribute to great leader
He has and will always inspire us
The day is also celebrated as Martyrdom Day
His sacrifice will always be remembered
He was involved in the Kakori Conspiracy, the Assembly bomb incident, the Delhi Conspiracy, the shooting of Saunders at Lahore and the Second Lahore conspiracy among others. He used to fondly recite couplet which was his only poetic composition: ‘Dushman ki goliyon ka hum saamna karenge. Azad hi rahein hain, azad hi rahenge’ (Will face the foe’s bullet, I am free, I shall remain free.) Azad was and will always be an inspiration to the youth.
