During the Big Bash League (BBL) match between Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes, TV presenter Mel McLaughlin had to face an awkward situation while interviewing Chris Gayle.
McLaughlin interviewed Gayle following his dismissal during which the West Indies cricketer, who plays for Renegades in the BBL, asked a female reporter out for a drink and that too on live TV.
Gayle after scoring 15-ball 41 said, “I wanted to come and have an interview with you [Mel McLaughlin] as well.” The left-handed batsman added, “That’s the reason why I’m here, just to see your eyes for the first time. It’s nice. Hopefully we can win this game and have a drink after. Don’t blush baby.”
The TV presenter did look uncomfortable while Gayle was making comments and replied, “I’m not blushing.”
According to cricket.com.au, Cricket Australia (CA) has condemned the comments made by Gayle towards the female TV presenter.
The website further quoted Renegades chief executive, Stuart Coventry, who said, “I heard Chris’s comments and we agree with both Cricket Australia and Channel 10 that they’re disrespectful and simply inappropriate.”
“We’ll certainly be talking to him in association with Cricket Australia about it. “The Melbourne Renegades is all about its appeal to kids, families and females. “There’s just no place for that sort of behaviour,” he added.
Even former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff criticised Gayle for his remarks and tweeted, “Well played @ Mel_Mclaughlin!! Big fan of @ henrygayle but made himself look a bit of a chop there”.
