The 2018 Commonwealth Games, commonly known as Gold Coast 2018, is currently being held on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia. From 15-year-old shooter Anish Bhanwala to Haryana’s Mau Bhaker, Indians are showing their mettle in clinching the medals at the international multi-sport event.
The event that kicked off on the April 4th will be ending on the April 15th, 2018. So, before it ends, we need to share a special fact regarding the CWG 2018. For the uninitiated, the venue of the mega event is the Village Roadshow Studios in Qxenford. From ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ to ‘Thor Ragnarok’, and our most favourite ‘Scooby Doo’ have been shot in Village Roadshow Studios.
Now, the Gold Coast’s thriving movie industry which is also one of Hollywood’s biggest go-to destinations outside the US has been seamlessly integrated with the Commonwealth Games — the reel blending with real at studios converted into stadiums.
Also known as Oxenford Studios, the Village Roadshow Studios is hosting the boxing, table tennis, squash events apart from acting as a training venue for badminton. Village Roadshow is a humongous facility off the Queensland Highway, surrounded by mountains on one side and green plains on the other.
Oxenford Studios act as a magnet for Hollywood as it has nine soundstages, three water tanks and 10 production areas. Built at a cost of Au$15.5 million, the Sound Stage 9 is the biggest in the southern hemisphere whereas the water tanks are largest in Australia.
However, for the 11 days of the Commonwealth Games, movie shoots have been halted and the studios have been partially shut. Oxenford makes for a riveting venue because of it’s smart use of light and sound that give the matches a dramatic effect while for the spectators who have turned up in thousands, it’s an opportunity to look at the locations where some of the blockbusters have been shot. As a legacy of the Commonwealth Games, the organisers hope the Village Roadshow Studios will attract more production houses.
The organisers were quoted as saying, “To ensure the studios successfully adapt to the Games and leave a legacy for film and television production, Village Roadshow and the Queensland Government entered into a partnership that simultaneously delivers a Games venue and provides a major drawcard for film productions.”
With the above, you can get an idea why the Games are being used as a platform to show that the Gold Coast isn’t just a surfer’s paradise, but it is a movie maker’s paradise as well. It is one of the biggest revenue and employment generating industry for Gold Coast. Thor’s Chris Hemsworth is a Coaster himself and is often spotted at its beaches and cafes.
A fun fact is popular among the masses that the Gold Coast’s most famous offenders are Johnny Depp, Pistol and Boo. Three years ago, Depp was accused of smuggling in his two Yorkshire terriers named Pistol and Boo, without authorisation for the shooting of the fifth instalment of his Pirates of the Caribbean series. Overnight, Jack Sparrow ‘Depp”, Pistol and Boo became Gold Coast’s most-wanted trio, and the actor was forced to hire a private jet and fly the dogs out.
