Listed to be the most severe storm since the super cyclone of 1999, Cyclone Fani has made its landfall in Odisha. Taking to their respective Twitter handles, Bollywood celebrities expressed concern over the millions evacuated and posted prayers for their safety.
Abhishek Bachchan and Sidharth Malhotra led Bollywood in praying for those affected as their respective tweets read, “Prayers for all in the path of #CycloneFani. Stay safe” (sic) and “Stay strong and safe everyone! #CycloneFani” (sic).
While Tamannah Bhatia’s tweet read, “My prayers with people of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Stay indoors and help each other #CyloneFani” (sic), Riteish Deshmukh tweeted, “Prayers for the safety of everyone in the area that could be affected by #CycloneFani Stay safe & keep the emergency numbers handy. #GodBless” (sic) and Rahul Bose shared, “All of us @RugbyIndia have deep connections with Odisha. Some of our best men & women players hail from that state. Our thoughts are with them and their families. @RugbyIndia will extend any and all the help they need in these testing times. We stand together. @OdishaSportsDep.” (sic)
Safety steps were taken by the government to evacuate over a million people as the storm is heading towards the eastern coast of the country. Besides, to deal with any kind of exigency, the Indian Coast Guard had positioned 34 disaster relief teams at different spots and also deployed four ships.
The Coast Guard tweeted on Thursday, “While Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm FANI lay centered 170 kms ENE of Vishakhapatnam India Coast Guard positions 34 Disaster Relief Teams DRTs at Vizag Chennai Paradip Gopalpur Haldia Frazergunj & Kolkata besides 04 Coast Guard ships at Vizag & Chennai DefenceMinIndia.” According to the Union home ministry, an estimated 10,000 villages and 52 towns in Odisha are set to encounter winds blowing at 225 kmph.
