Oscars 2017 will be held on February 26, 2017, at 5.30 pm PST at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The 89th Academy Awards have been in the news for various reasons. Indian origin actor, Dev Patel has been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor at the Oscar Awards 2017 for his role in the 2016 movie Lion. There have been various nominations for Indian origin actors at the Oscars including the recent nomination of Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel. Apart from Mehboob Khand(1958) and Dev Patel (2017), Ismail Merchant, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and KK Kapil, Bhanu Athaiya, Ravi Shankar, Mira Nair, Satyajit Ray, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Ashvin Kumar, Deepa Mehta, Resul Pookutty, A.R. Rahman, Gulzar and Bombay Jayashri have been nominated for the Oscars. Out of these nominations, five Academy Awards have been received by Indian Origin artists at the prestigious award show. 1. Bhanu Athaiya – Best Costume Design – Gandhi (1983)
The first Oscar ever won by an Indian was for the 1983 super hit and critically acclaimed movie, Gandhi. Bhanu Athaiya won the golden lady at the 55th Academy Awards for Best Costume Design. 2. Satyajit Ray – Honorary Award (1992)
Satyajit Ray is the only Indian to have received an honorary award at the Oscars till date. The supremely talented director won the Honorary Award at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The Academy Honorary Award is given to celebrate motion picture achievements that are not covered by existing Academy Awards.
3. Resul Pookutty – Best Sound Mixing – Slumdog Millionaire (2009)
The 81st Academy Awards was an extraordinary event for Indian artists as three golden ladies were bagged by Indians for the super hit movie, Slumdog Millionaire. Resul Pookutty won the award for Best Sound Mixing for his contribution to Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars 2009.
4. AR Rahman – Best Original Score – Slumdog Millionaire (2009)
AR Rahman, who has made an international recognition for his music and talent. The musical maestro became the first Indian music director to win the golden lady for his phenomenal competition, which took the world by a storm. Slumdog Millionaire also marked the movie debut for Oscar Nominated actor, Dev Patel.
5. AR Rahman and Gulzar – Best Original Song – Slumdog Millionaire (2009)
AR Rahman and Gulzar created a storm and the Oscars 2009 by bagging the third Oscar for Slumdog Millioniare for their phenomenal song, Jai Ho. The song which became an anthem of the sort in 2008, brought Rahman his second Oscar at the prestigious award show.
